M F A and open studio!

Ahhhh!

I turned my thesis in to my dean yesterday. I am going to wear the damn outfit and walk in my graduation because this is seriously it! No more school. I’m almost done. Weird!

On may 9th from 6 to 9, and in the 11th from noon to 6, 2 of ccnys art mfa programs are having open studios! And there is a rad photo show opening on the 9th! Come up to city college and check out all of the awesome art we are making here!

For details please check the city college studio mfa blog!

Come over! I will give you seltzer or pie or malt liqueur or rice crispy treats!

Send me off with a damn bang! Give me feedback, glitter, highfives, beer, checks, kombucha, hugs, rap or post punk albums & buy my art so I don’t have to burn it or send it into cold storage!

Ok I need to get to work in the studio now! Going to quilt some paper and work on a new/updated set for photos and animation!

See ya.

work (art)

Hi!

So recently a new friend asked me about my work… i directed her to my blog, but as you can see my artwork is all mixed up with other stuff on here.

Good point, rad lady!

Fortunately I just took some decent pictures of some of my work, to apply for something, so I have newish pictures handy. Here are examples of what I’ve been doing lately. These are mostly pieces that fit together into an installation.

Since I am in the midst of this thing I don’t really have great pictures to show how they fit together. There will be a book also. And a video. Also I have a killer headache so I am not very organized today. So, without further pause, here is some of what i’ve been making. I had some trouble with the technology here – but the headache makes me just want to post and fix it later – so I will.

Here also is a cruddy image script with only titles, might make it easier: 1 – m friendship bracelet; 2 – rope friendship bracelet; 3 – stones; 4 – flashlight; 5 – marshmallow; 6 – smoke/moon patch; 7 – tent ghosts; 8 – ghosts; 9 – flashlight beam; 10 – tarp tent.

open studio fun!

Hi!

Please excuse the late posting of this – the event was like a month ago! Whoops! I forgot. Huh. This grad school thing is distracting.

Open Studio was fun. It was kind of weird, and I have had crowd/people anxiety for a long time, so it can get pretty intense now that I’ve moved here and barely hang out with anyone. There were a ton of people there (the eye twitch that I developed as soon as we decided to move finally stopped! I don’t recommend 4 months of eye twitch, fyi, yikes). Anyhow, the studio is usually very quiet, if you saw those photos of the space in earlier posts you can imagine… not so much traffic up there. I usually only see a few people in my program, mostly my studio mate, and professors up there.

Anyhow, it was really fun, through whatever personal weirdness that I have.

Lots of people came, many of my awesome professors were there, and my friends Mark and Lauren came all the way from different parts of Queens. THANK YOU GUYS! It was fun to hang out with people from the school some more too. I feel like I am a little too focused on working sometimes, and don’t get to hang out with many of the awesome people I am going to school with.

It was good, overall. It’s always great to hear feedback from the public. And I met some wonderful people, and I got some ideas. And it was really fun to hear how people interacted and reacted to my new work. It is always good to talk about the work, or try to explain it. It really helps me, it seems like I am always figuring out what the heck I’m doing through talking about it. Grad school is great for that. I am learning a lot about myself and the work I do. Opening up the studio to people I don’t know helps me get a fresh perspective too. I’ve had a great studio visit and some wonderful critiques since then, but that open studio really opened up my studio heart.

Awesome! Love, Katie

one of the guys in my program said he was glad there were girls around to do stuff like this! yay girls!

Art Newsletter for July!

Hello Everyone!

In July please visit Crow Arts Manor, part of Milepost5 in SE Portland, to see one of my paintings of plants. 850 NE 81st Ave. #114 in Portland. This space is awesome, and houses writing classes of all sorts. The group show my painting is in promises to be awesome!

I’ve been super busy with 3 dayjobs, so not showing too much art lately – and I’m going to New York for grad school soon! Yes! I’m out of here in 3 weeks! I’m so crazy excited! I didn’t think it’d happen, really, so haven’t told that many people about it yet. But it’s happening. It’s real. It’s going to be a big move, I’ve been in Portland a super long time, so I feel funny about leaving. And leaving family & friends, and this beautiful coast. I’ll be back at some point soon though. I am really excited for some intensive artistic focus & professional development. And I am looking forward to learning how to be an art teacher, at a college level, as well as being in the center of the art world for a couple of years.

I’m having a “fire sale” with most of my pieces of art available at huge discounts. I’ve got to pare down and would like to sell my remaining older work. If you are interested please let me know. Many of my abstract landscapes are available as well as lots of wonderful random paintings, fabric landscape, prints, sculptures, etc. Here are some examples… if you find something you want let me know and I’ll tell you if i still have it – and we’ll plan it all out. http://www.katiespain.com/Katie_Spain/Work/Work.html,
http://www.kathleensimpson.info/kathleensimpson.info/Artwork/Pages/This_Horizon.html, http://www.kathleensimpson.info/kathleensimpson.info/Archive/Archive.html.

I’m also selling a beautiful wood bookshelf, a fancy mattress and box spring (half a year old – firm pillowtop), a pretty vintage yellow dining table, wood and metal utility shelves, and a few odds and ends. And I’m giving away a few great things; including a lovely heirloom vintage couch with a wood frame – which needs to be moved by someone else and their friend, reupholstering, and a good home. A 4 1/2 foot tall wicker shelf thing. An amazing tall and thin studio shelf. A nightstand and end table that I painted up all pretty, and some other random goodies. Please please let me know if you are looking for anything in particular (just might have it for you) or are interested in the items I listed.

Thank you for all of your support over the years! And thanks for your patience and help along this path. I will update you soon. I am excited for this adventure, and for the art that will come out of it. You can also follow my changes on my blog… I’ll make sure to give detailed reports.

Love! Art! Love!
Katie
