Heyyyy! How’re you?

This last term of grad school had been so crazy fun! A million things at a million miles an hour. A million! Yep.

Through all the other good stuff I’ve been working in a group printing an edition of fancy prints for awesome artist Nicola Lopez. Its part of a cool program at city college called City Editions led by masterprintmaker genius Megan Foster. Nicola Lopez has a fantastic show up at Pace Prints right now which you should see if you can! Wonderful prints that push the media in exciting directions. Look her up! The project I’ve been working on combines woodblocks, etching, collage and embossing, and will culminate in 2 prints, in editions. It’s been really fun and a great experience to learn how printshops produce editions with artists. A totally different methodology than just printing for oneself. But the efficiency I’ve honed through this certainly crosses over into the prints I am making in my own practice. Also I have made some really good friends! And will help more artists print because of this! So it’s like the best thing ever.

I’ve been really excited about printmaking lately! I got to TA a great relief (lino mostly) class for Carl Fudge who’s paintings and prints you need to look up! He and the class were wonderful! I loved working with those people, lots of great prints came out if that class and the smart students! Also I’ve been pulling 2×4 prints! What I mean by that is I carve and print 2×4 boards. I also have done large plywood, and am working on another board (the dimensions of which is around 1x12x40). I have to hand print them, so they take a while, and muscle, and its been awesome. I use the print shop at City when no one else is around and listen to loud music, it’s really fun!!!

In fact I just finished another 2×4 print today! This one is called ‘The roadtrip we’ll take’. It’s 4 layer combo of reduction and multiple block goodness.

I am so tired and need to finish up one of the last assignments I will have in this school. I really want to go to the beach soon, so I need to finish up a bunch of things! Also graduating, ummm, yeah.

Ahhhh!

I turned my thesis in to my dean yesterday. I am going to wear the damn outfit and walk in my graduation because this is seriously it! No more school. I’m almost done. Weird!

On may 9th from 6 to 9, and in the 11th from noon to 6, 2 of ccnys art mfa programs are having open studios! And there is a rad photo show opening on the 9th! Come up to city college and check out all of the awesome art we are making here!

With a focus on different ways humanity navigates in and works with nature, this interactive installation combines recycled materials, fabrics, live plants, painting, sculpture and printmaking to create a strange situation involving outdoor activities. You are invited to experience this version of nature, recreations of natural environments and recreational activities, from the safety of Compton-Goethals Gallery.

This work is a reexamination of organized outdoor activities, exploring relationships people have with the natural environment. I am interested in the thin membranes of safety that lie between the natural world and organized modern life. Often humorous and culminating in installation or video, this work combines recycled materials, fabrics, live plants, painting, sculpture and printmaking. I re-create biological environments and the tools associated with them, like giant friendship bracelets or camping tools without function. These awkward works nudge at nostalgia of time spent in nature.

Events during the show also include:

Camp Craft Time: Monday March 18th, 1 pm (friendship bracelet and drawing party)

Short Talk/Meet and Greet: Thursday March 21st, 5 pm

Thesis Show Coming! (Recreation)

March 18th to 22nd. Reception Wednesday March 20th from 5 to 8 pm.

Travel Directions:

You can take either the 1 train, or the A,B,C, or D. The 1 has a stop at 137 (which says City College on it), and you just walk east (the stop is on broadway), walk through a little park right away, then keep going to Amsterdam Ave, and up to Compton-Goethals Hall between 139th and 140th. The A train is really fast, and the 145th stop is great, and if you take a train on that line head west once you get out of the train. The stop lets you out at St. Nicholas and 145th, so walk uphill toward Convent Ave, and west on that street (turn left onto Convent, it’s beautiful) until you get down to the campus at 140th, the first building on the right once you go through that metal gate thing is Compton-Goethals but you have to go up some stairs to get to the entrance because there is another building sort of stuck in the corner of it (weird, you’ll see) which is not the right one.

MFA Open Studios at City College of New York (11/29, 5-9 pm)

Hi!

Wow! Open Studios at CCNY is this week, on Thursday evening! That’s so soon! And so exciting! Come see what I’ve been up to lately!

Come to Hamilton Heights from 5 to 9 this Thursday – November 29th! The studios will be open in Compton-Goethals Hall (2nd floor, that’s where my studio is), and Shepard Hall (4th floor)! Come up to CCNY, at W 140th and Amsterdam, on either the 1 (to 137th, then walk east a little to Amsterdam) or a, b, c, or d trains (to 145th, then walk west on 145th, you can walk down Convent and past so many beautiful old homes, or just walk down Amsterdam to 140th).

moving studios

Hi there!

Um, so I’m moving my studio from CCNY’s Shepard Hall to Compton-Goethals Hall. Across Convent Avenue, into the heart of the old schools small art department. Very different feelings in the different spaces. Before I finish moving over I wanted to post a few pictures of Shepard.

I really will miss it, but I am excited to move as well. I’m moving into a huge divided up room, so it will have more of a community feeling. My studio will be about the same size. Shepard Hall was a little lonely, and I have enough of that already, so it was time for a change. I’ll still be a lone wolf, just in a new way. Though, if you know me you’ll remember my years in faux co-op studios. I do well with community, it’s what I like.

From these pictures you’ll see, the building is just gorgeous. My studio was a little haunted, but not in a bad way. I will miss the skylight and the green tiles. It was like working in a turret. I’ll post pictures of my new space soon. It is awesome in a different way. Very exciting.
